Thailand economy thrives on tourism and Thailand tourism on an average contributes 6.7% to the country’s GDP. The number of tourists in Thailand has grown considerably over the years since 1967. According to the record, more than 14 million international tourists visited Thailand in 2007 which generated 547, 782 million Thai baht income. Tourism Authority of Thailand has pointed out that 55% of the tourists in Thailand come from the Asia Pacific region. Western tourists are from United States, Britain, Scandinavia and Germany. Recently, more and more Russians and people from Middle East are also visiting Thailand.
The peak period for Thailand tourism is during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Asian tourists are more interested in the historical and cultural sites in Bangkok whereas western tourists look forward to the southern beaches and islands. The passionate trekkers explore the northern region. The north east zone is still unexplored one. Separate tourism police operates in the major tourist areas to help the foreign visitors. Thai government is taking up lots of initiatives to promote Thailand tourism.
